Vice’s Women in Fiction issue is an interesting package. There’s a short story by Mary Gaitskill here, an interview with Marilynne Robinson there, and a short story by Joyce Carol Oates over yonder. And then…there’s the fashion spread. Featuring models styled and posed as famous female writers who have killed themselves. At their times of death.
I am not a person who talks to no end on tumblr. I rather draw. But after seeing this trough Super MOOC is disgusting beyond any measurement I know.
We are exposed to awful treatment of women in media. It is so much more important what woman is wearing, no matter what she has to say.
But this… this brings it to whole another level. This is: “Writer XY suffered from depression, which led to her suicide. Oh and yeah BTW, stockings on photo which represents XY writer are Z brand, and you can look just as fabulous for only 99.99” I am all for raising awareness of mental conditions trough pop culture. Photos may have artistic value. But selling your stockings, dresses and shoes trough it is barf worthy.
Depression is not funny or glamorous. Suicide isn’t either.
